Up to 20 Dodge Sprinter Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) will be placed in the United States between now and the first quarter of 2008 as part of a test-fleet program. Four of the vehicles, built on the previous-generation Dodge Sprinter, already are in operation with customers. DaimlerChrysler is the only auto manufacturer currently evaluating a variety of plug-in hybrid powertrain (diesel and gas) configurations in real-world, customer-operation service within the United States.

The market for electric LSV's was validated in 1998 when the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) created a new class of motor vehicle, the LSV. Currently, 35 states have passed legislation accepting the NHTSA ruling on LSV's, allowing vehicles to be driven on roads with a 35 mph (60 kph) or less posted speed limit. LSV's have a maximum allowable speed of 25 mph (40 kph). Answer: false. Provided they don’t grow big enough to eat you, carnivorous plants can add a uniquely green bug-reducing element to your garden. These macabre miracles of Mother Nature lure insects into an inescapable trap, then secrete enzymes that dissolve and digest the hapless bugs. Nearly 600 species exist; the following inhabit the United States. The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) has leaves that snap together when an insect alights, trapping the victim inside. Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and butterwort (Pinguicula spp.) have leaves covered with sticky hairs that pin the bugs in place; the butterwort’s sticky leaves also roll up, further ensnaring the victim. Pitcher plants (Sarracenia spp.) trap insects with a pool of sticky fluid at the bottom of their pitcher-like leaves, as does darlingtonia (Chrysamphora spp.), whose wide head atop a serpent-like stalk gives it the nickname “cobra orchid.” One other carnivorous plant, the bladderwort (Utricularia spp.), lives in pools and captures water bugs using a “trap door.” www.pomegranate.com, Sierra Club
